What are Binaural Beats and How Do They Help You?

What Are Binaural Beats?

Binaural Beats are a Brainwave Entrainment Technology designed to put your brain into the same activity state as when you are meditating using traditional methods. Traditional meditation can be very difficult because it’s difficult to hold the mind’s focus, so many people miss out on its benefits. Brainwave entrainment puts you in the meditative state easily and quickly. It gives anyone a chance to use meditation as a tool for personal growth, relaxation or spiritual practice. You don’t need any special skills or practice to meditate using binaural beats, just a pair of headphones and an MP3 player!

How to use binaural beats: Find a comfortable place free of distractions. It’s important not to listen to binaural beats when you need to do something that requires your full attention like driving. Avoid any tasks that are mentally demanding because the meditative state is not conducive to quick, action-oriented critical thinking.

Listen to binaural beats when you want to relax, clear your mind, get your creative juices flowing, engage your intuition to help solve problems and for personal development work such as repeating affirmations and doing visualization.

Be sure to give yourself enough listening time! The brain requires about 7 minutes to entrain, or fall in sync, with the audio stimulus. Give yourself at least 15-30 minutes of listening time to experience the benefits.

You can meditate with your eyes open, and focus on a candle or an object to help focus your mind; or you can meditate with eyes closed, and focus solely on the music. Experiment with both to see what works best. Beginners usually find eyes-closed meditation to be easier because there are less distractions.

Use Headphones to Make Binaural Beats Work

You must use stereo headphones for binaural beats to work.
Why? Because the ‘beats’ themselves are created in your brain. The word binaural means “having or relating to two ears.” It works like this: each ear receives a slightly different frequency at the same time, and the brain perceives the tone that is the difference of the two.

If 210 Hz pulses into one ear and 200 into the other, the brain will process the two sounds into a 10 Hz frequency, which happens to be the same frequency produced by the brain during meditation.

When you start listening to your track, focus your attention on the music so that you help your mind settle into a relaxed state. Omharmonics tracks are interesting so they hold your attention, and soothing to promote relaxation – a very pleasant, easy way to meditate!

Be patient. Training and developing your brain takes time. Imagine if you were an athlete and you wanted to run a marathon but wanted to skip the training – good luck, right? While binaural beats put your brain into a meditative state, they do not have any special powers to create specific changes in your brain. So if you’re looking for a personal development quick fix, you won’t find it with binaural beats! All they do is open the door – you must enter and do the work yourself!

What can you use binaural beats for?

1. Enhancing your meditation practice: “Meditation is very important. It has a very high objective – to take us away from this world of suffering into the world of happiness, joy and Bliss. It is a method, a discipline, that we have to follow very discreetly and if we follow it properly we will find that meditation helps us to discover ourselves, what we really are.” – Swami Nirliptananda.

Binaural beats help you get into meditation; from there, you can work on self-discovery or any other objective – or, simply ‘be’ and enjoy the meditative experience with no agenda.

2. Increasing your intelligence and mental abilities: you’ve heard of the Mozart effect, right? People who listen to Mozart’s work tend to score higher on various cognitive tests and demonstrate higher mental performance. Binaural beats do the same thing: they help create a synchronicity between the brain’s hemispheres. This helps you think more holistically. Instead of being predominantly a left-brain analyst or a right-brain creative, you become a whole-brain thinker.

To stimulate this ability, listen to binaural beats and then go work on brain puzzles or complex problems. Also, keep a journal! Meditation often leads to an amazing amount of inspired ideas. Write them down before you forget them!

3. Stress Relief: meditation is the best way to relieve stress, and what better way than to be soothed by a soundtrack that takes you away from your problems more easily than the best bubble bath and wine? Studies have shown that daily meditation increases activity in areas of the brain responsible for positive moods. Stress relief is critical for improving and maintaining health, so a daily meditation practice will have effects that reach literally every cell in your body.

How to use binaural beats for stress relief

When you’re meditating, you’re more aware of your mental chatter. Listen to it and you will see how negative it tends to be. You can shut that down in two ways. First, focus and re-focus on the music and get your mind off your worries. Second, when an unwanted thought intrudes, replace it with one that makes you feel happy. For example, “I’m broke! How will I ever pay my rent!” is a stress-causing thought. Replace it with, “Every day I am becoming more aware of income-producing opportunities.” Of course use your own language and tailor your replacement to your needs – and make it a command, like this sentence just did. It is telling the brain to hunt for income.

The best part about using binaural beats is you can just relax into it and let them do the work.
You don’t need any knowledge of how it all works to get the effects. Just remember to use stereo headphones, and off you go into the amazing, fascinating world of your mind!
